How much time in Sacramento jail will my nephew serve?
Leigh Asked:
My nephew was convicted of a white collar crime in 1995 and sentenced to California State Prison for 3 years. He served 18 months and 18 days (half time) because he was credited with time off for good behavior and time off for work credits.
Now he’s facing a one year term in the county jail (Sacramento County) for a different white collar crime. How much time will he serve? Does Sacramento County offer time off for good behavior and time off work credits? How does the county jail system work for time off?

Spending your birthday in jail sounds like lyrics from a blues song but for one man who allegedly led Sacramento police officers on a chase it’s more like a reality show. Steven Richardson, 41, led police officers on a chase early Friday before crashing into a drainage canal, according to a crime summary. The summary gives this account: Officers were called to check on a driver who was reported passed out and sleeping in his vehicle at a stop sign on North Avenue shortly before 1 a.m. Friday. Officers said the driver, who appeared to be under the influence, drove off in the vehicle. A pursuit followed through the area and onto eastbound Highway 80. The driver tried to exit the freeway at the Raley Boulevard ramp, but crashed into a drainage canal. Police arrested Richardson, whose birthday is listed in booking sheets as today, on suspicion of driving under the influence and evading police officers. Online jail records showed Richardson still in jail as of early Saturday evening
A Sacramento County licensed vocational nurse faces felony charges for allegedly stealing medication from the county jail’s dispensary.
Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran said Erika Youngs was arrested in July. She was on a list of nurses that the jail would use whenever the facility had a shortage of nurses, Curran said.
Curran said the inmates never went without their medication.
Her next court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
A Sacramento County judge has temporarily blocked the sheriff from releasing jail inmates early under a state law that took effect last month.
The Sacramento County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association filed a lawsuit last week to stop the releases. The suit came after a county inmate with a violent record was arrested for attempted rape hours after he was freed.
Superior Court Judge Loren McMaster issued a tentative ruling Wednesday that said the state’s early release law was intended only for inmates in state prisons, not county jails. The law is meant to reduce prison overcrowding by freeing certain inmates before they have served their full sentences.
The temporary restraining order will be in effect until a hearing March 3.
I'm in Texas so my legal information may be a little different. From what I can tell, if he had probable cause, he wouldn't have asked you anything. Legally, they can search if they have probable cause without your permission.
He COULD, however, arrest you for the illegal lane change. It's within the officer's discretion whether to ticket or arrest but since he did nothing but detain you, he was probably just trying to scare you while on his fishing expedition. If he found anything it would have most likely been thrown out because of the tainted discovery unless your car was impounded.
But since he didn't find anything, you didn't get arrested and you didn't even get a ticket – it's possible he was just going off a "hunch".
Lets just say I AM PAYING FOR YOUR STAY IN JAIL!!!

Sacramento State University police officers have caught a burglary suspect who Sacramento Police Department investigators believe may be connected to other break-ins.
Gary Moreno, 29, is in the Sacramento jail on suspicion of six felony counts of burglary and a remand arrest for a related charge. The latter is causing him to be held without bail, according to jail records.
Sacramento State police said Moreno had stolen property in his possession when he was arrested.
One burglary Moreno is being investigated in connection with is the theft of office equipment from an east Sacramento medical building.
The suspect’s image was captured on security cameras (see photo left).
Police said the burglar broke into a medical office complex in the 5000 block of J Street about 9 p.m. on Feb. 8. It’s unclear how he got into the building, police said.
The burglar entered several offices in the building and took office equipment before fleeing.
